2014 Fellowship

”  …..In accordance with its multi-year programme of work (ECOSOC resolution 2009/15), the 2014 priority theme of the Commission on the Status of Women is “Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG)* for women and girls”.

The Commission also evaluated progress in the implementation of the agreed conclusions from its fifty-fifth session on “Access and participation of women and girls to education, training, science and technology, including for the promotion of women’s equal access to full employment and decent work”.

Five students awarded 2014 WomenNC Fellowships from UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State University, and Duke University presented the following research topics and “best practice” North Carolina model organizations at local North Carolina Forums and at the United Nations 58th CSW Conference:

  • Millennium Development Goals 4 & 5 – Reduce Child Mortality & Improve Maternal Health

  • Women’s Empowerment Through Education – Advancing in STEM (Science,Technology, Engin. & Math)
         NC Model:  The PURPOSE Institute  (Fellow: Alex Polk, NC State University)
  • Young Adult Involvement in Social Justice – Local, National & International
         NC Model:  WomenNC Student Fellowship Program (Fellow: Sarah Scriven, Duke University)
  • U.N. Post-2015 Agenda – Gender Equality, Women’s Empowerment & Gender-Based Violence
         NC Model:  NC Women United  (Fellow:  Max Seunik, UNC-Chapel Hill)
  • Promote Healthy Relational Norms & Messages – to Fight Teen Violence
