ANNOUNCING NEW PARTNERSHIPS FOR WomenNC
WomenNC is excited to begin implementing one of our Strategic Plan goals to “Increase Community Partnerships”.
WomenNC’s signature Fellows Program provides selected North Carolina university students with the opportunity to research local women’s issues, search for “best practice” solutions, culminating with the presentation of their research at the United Nations annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), in New York City. Through leadership training, mentorship, and UN participation, WomenNC Fellows acquire invaluable experience and resources to return to their campus and community to bring awareness and making a positive impact on local women’s human rights.
The WomenNC Fellows’ local-to-global and back to-local perspective, combined with their passion for women’s issues, will contribute to raising a generation that honors women’s human rights, including maternal and child health, education, job equity, and prevention of human trafficking and violence against women in North Carolina and beyond.
During Thanksgiving week, we were especially thankful to complete our first formal written university partnership agreement with UNC Global, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. UNC Global is providing a WNC Fellowship award for one UNC-Chapel Hill student, will collaborate with WomenNC in its efforts to recruit student Fellows at UNC, and assist with scheduling speaking engagements for the Fellows to expand WomenNC’s community impact.
In the last five years, 11 of our 24 Fellows (including two young men) have been students at Carolina, so we’re proud that our first university partnership is with UNC-Chapel Hill. We’re certain that our newest Fellows from UNC-Chapel Hill, after returning from their United Nations experience in March 2014, will enrich their university and local NC community.
In addition to the UNC Global partnership, WomenNC has developed a partnership with the Women’s Center at North Carolina State University, where we’ll host our February 2014 event, showcasing the 2014 Fellows’ research. With the Women’s Center as a partner, we’re excited to host this event at the Institute for Emerging Issues in the spectacular new Hunt Library on NCSU’s Centennial campus (See preliminary Save-the-Date details below).
Other WomenNC Partnerships being considered and discussed include United Nations Association-Triangle West, Wake Women’s Attorneys, North State Bank, Meredith College, and Duke University. If your organization or company would like to partner with WomenNC on its programs to empower and educate young North Carolinians about women’s issues, please contact us at info@womennc.org
