Slater Newman, one of our advisers, mentors, and close supporters, passed away on May 13, 2015. He was a former NCSU professor and a life-time human rights activist passionate about ratification of CEDAW. Due to his tireless efforts, the NC General Assembly passed a resolution supporting the ratification of CEDAW at the federal level. Slater supported the Cities for CEDAW campaign and joined the National conference call last December. He was one of the first individuals to welcome the formation of the NC Committee for CEDAW/CSW, now known as WomenNC, and was always an active member of our team. Slater wrote the lyrics of the beautiful “Let’s Ratify CEDAW” and willingly performed the song at many WomenNC events.
WomenNC is honored to announce the Dr. Slater Newman CEDAW Fellowship. Annually, one outstanding WomenNC Fellow with a passion for women’s human rights and CEDAW will receive this honorary award.
Slater will be missed as a mentor, adviser, and inspirational resource for our organization, but we are happy to know he is resting in peace. We offer our condolences to his family and many, many close friends.
