This pride month we want to highlight work of Josh King and Naile Segule, who focused their WomenNC research on transgender issues.
Josh King, a 2014-15 WomenNC scholar, explored the root causes behind the high suicide rate of trans youth and discussed global and community-based solutions. He detailed a need for school- and community-based initiatives that actively address harassment against trans youth. Read Josh’s paper, “Night Falls Fast: Preventing Suicide in Trans Youth.”
Naile Segule analyzed the quality of trans-inclusive healthcare within the University of North Carolina system. She offered policy recommendations that seek to increase the retention of transgender and gender-nonconforming students by improving their mental health. Read Naila’s paper, “The State of Trans-Inclusive Healthcare at UNC System Universities.”
