Over the course of their life, Black men and women are disproportionately more likely to be killed by the police than white people. Racialized police brutality is part of the status quo in this country, and its unjustly killing Black Americans like #GeorgeFloyd and #BreonnaTaylor.

Durham voters recently made history when they elected Nida Allam to their board of county commissioners. She and four other women are set to serve as Durham’s first all-female board of county commissioners come December. The first Muslim American woman elected to public office in North Carolina, @nidaallam ran on a platform that focused on creating safe and healthy communities, increasing access to high-quality education, removing legal and economic barriers to marginalized groups, and holding government accountable.
