Notable North Carolina Women: Charnessa Ridley

Published
April 19, 2021

Charnessa Ridley is the Associate Director of the Campus Violence Response Center at UNCG. The CVRC provides confidential advocacy therapy services to any member of the UNCG community who experiences violence. She is deeply committed to gender-based violence prevention and supporting those who experience harm.

Charnessa also serves as the President of North Carolina Women United, a coalition of progressive state and local organizations working to achieve the full political, social, and economic equality of all women across NC. NCWU works to build women’s power through grassroots activism, community organizing, legislative advocacy, and engagement in the political process.

NC Women United seeks to empower women through education by informing them of the issues that impact North Carolina women and creating a space for them to use their political power and voice to engage with their elected officials. NCWU recently released their 2021 Legislative Report Card, which grades the NC Legislature’s progress against NCWU’s intersectional agenda on critical issues to promoting women’s equality and combating systemic racism. Charnessa enjoys this work because, “it makes a difference and has an impact that will transcend generations. I stand for social justice and I believe that everyone deserves equitable economic, political, and social rights and opportunities. We do not reach that place without addressing the impact of racism and structural racialization.”
